- FOREWORDTheProclamationto definethepowersanddutiesof theCentralandRegionalExecutiveOrgansof theTransitionalGovernmentof EthiopiaNo.41/1993empowerstheMinistryof WorksandUrbanDevelopmentto preparetheCountry'sBuildingCode,issueStandardsfor designandconstructionworks,andfollowupandsupervisetheimplementationof same.In exerciseof thesepowersandin dischargeof itsresponsibility,theMinistryis issuingaseriesof BuildingCodeStandardsof generalapplication.The purposeof thesestandardsis to serveas nationallyrecognizeddocuments,theapplicationof whichis deemedtoensurecomplianceof buildingswiththeminimumrequirementsfordesign,constructionandqualityof materialssetdownbytheNationalBuildingCode.The majorbenefitsto be gainedin applyingthesestandardsaretheharmonizationofprofessionalpracticeandtheensuringof appropriatelevelsof safety,healthandeconomywithdueconsiderationof theobjectiveconditionsandneedsofthecountry.As thesestandardsaretechnicaldocum~ntswhich,bytheirverynature,requireperiodicupdating,revisededitionswill beissuedbytheMinistryfromtimetotimeas.appropriate.TheMinistrywelcomescommentsandsuggestionsonallaspectoftheEthiopianBuildingCodeStandards.All feedbackreceivedwill becarefullyreviewedbyprofessionalexpertsin thefieldof buildingconstructionwith a view to possibleincorporationof amendmentsin futureeditions.HaileAssegidieMinisterMinistryof WorksandUrbanDevelopment1995
